Q: I Have never spoken publicly. I am just starting. Can I join?
A: Yes! We all have to start somewhere. At the Podium is designed to help people like you get started. Don’t wait, join now!
Q: Do I have to be a member of the NSA (National Speakers Association) to join?
A: No you don’t. We don’t have any criteria that you have to meet to join, except that you want to speak! In fact, ATP Speaker Membership can help you get the experience you need to meet the criteria of NSA.
Q: I’m already a professional speaker. What do I have to gain by joining?
A: We can designate you as a professional speaker in our directory, so you’ll be distinguished from those with less experience.
For you, membership will enhance any other marketing and business building you are doing and open you up to many more opportunities as well as give you the training, tools, and resources to continue climbing to the top!
Q: Does At the Podium serve as an agent for speakers, specifically making calls, submitting applications, negotiating contracts, and booking engagements?
A: We do not provide these services at the base membership level. You, or someone on your team (assistant, intern, other), will do the actual legwork of bookings. Depending on your needs, we can refer you to contractors who can do bookings for you. Please inquire.
We do have an upgrade to the membership (by application only) to be part of our VIP Speaker referral service, where we can provide event planners with specific, hand-picked recommendations of preferred speakers that we know and love. We make the introduction between the event planner and you, and then we complete the application and booking process. This service is an additional fee and requires a vetting process, and you must be an ATP Speaker Member to qualify. So the first thing to do is join the base membership
Q: Are the speaking opportunities that come through At the Podium paid or unpaid?
A: They can be either or both. But because we serve many non-profits, community organizations, and small businesses with limited budgets, many are looking for free speakers. Sometimes they will offer a small honorarium or cover travel expenses.
Some engagements offer a fee and sometimes a great fee! And as At the Podium grows, we are always on the lookout for as many paid engagements as we can find. On any engagement, you can ask for and negotiate a fee or other compensation agreement, even if it’s listed as free. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
Remember speaking for free can still result in revenue for you from getting exposure for other opportunities and clients. Speaking for free can be a great way to build your speaking skills and business, especially in the early stages, by helping you build your portfolio of photos, videos, and testimonials.
Q: Do you guarantee that I will get speaking engagements?
A: No, we make no guarantees. We provide you all the tips and tools to best position yourself for opportunities and to notify you of opportunities. After that, it’s up to you to apply and land the engagements. However, ATP Speaker Membership will help you attract, find, and land even more opportunities outside of ATP. So even if you don’t get speaking engagements through us, you can increase your chances of getting speaking engagements elsewhere, by being a member, having that visibility and credential, plus using all of our business and speaking building tools and resources.
Q: Does At the Podium take a commission or percentage of speaking fees for engagements?
A: Nope! At the base membership level, you keep your full fee. That is one of the things that makes us different compared to a traditional speakers bureau. All you pay At the Podium is your membership fee.
Our VIP Speakers, who elect to, and apply, and go through a vetting process to be part of that program, do pay a fee for certain engagements we facilitate. But at the base membership level, you keep your full fee, because you are doing the logistics work. That’s how we save you money.
Q: I’m not ready to be listed in the public speaker directory, but I’d like to have access to the other member benefits. Do I have to be listed in the directory?
A: Not at all. At the base membership level, you do not have to be listed in the public speaker directory. You can ask to be added to the directory when you are ready.
Q: How do I join? What happens after I join?
A: You can join right now by selecting a payment plan on the membership page (links back to Speaker Membership page). Once you make your payment, you’ll be asked to fill out a a couple of forms that gives us your membership information and the information for your listing in our speakers directory. While it’s best to do this immediately, you can bookmark that page and come back to it later. You will get immediate access to the member area, where you can begin accessing our resources, training, tools, and information, join our Facebook group, and start receiving notifications of speaking opportunities. So join now, and let’s get started!
Q: What’s the difference between the set-up fee and the membership fee?
A: The set-up fee is a one-time fee at the beginning of your membership. It covers the cost of collecting the information we need from you and adding your listing to our directory. We will edit and polish the information you give us to present you in the best possible light.
The membership fee keeps your listing and membership active, allowing you to enjoy all of the other member benefits.
When you think of the cost of other business and networking groups you belong to, or the cost of other marketing you do for your business, At the Podium membership is low cost and high value in comparison. It’s a no-brainer!
Q: Do you require contracts for your membership?
A: Nope! No contracts.
Q: Do you have a cancellation and refund policy?
A: Yes. You can find them here.
Q: I’m not located in your geographic region of the Northeastern United States. Can I or should I still join the membership?
A: Yes, you can join. Thanks to the internet, you can still enjoy most of the member benefits. You can get a listing on the ATP website, get member discounts, join the Facebook group and network with other speakers, get the tips and training and resources to grow your business … All of that is still worth the price of membership!
The only differences for you are that the majority of speaking opportunities, right now, are in the geographic region we serve (CT, MA, RI, NY, NJ). Also some of our product and service providers are local and can only work locally (like photographers and videographers). But, others like speaking coaches and web designers can work with you virtually from anywhere.
You can use your listing on the ATP website and your ATP credential to promote yourself in your area.
We are growing everyday, so as more people, planners, and organizations join in other regions, we’ll have more to offer you there. Join us and help us grow!
